summer camp

Artworks Summer Camp is a highly creative, encouraging environment for day campers ages 6-17. Students explore different art mediums, giving an educational hands-on approach to art through a series of week-long sessions. We encourage students to participate in multiple weeks.

Camp dates: Bethesda June 16th to August 30th (Ages 6-12)(Ages 13-17)
Mclean: June 23rd-August 30th (Ages 6-12)

Camp is held Monday through Friday 9am to 3pm. Aftercare is available until 5:15pm.

Ages 6-12

Students are separated by age to ensure age appropriate activities. Projects change every week, students doing multiple weeks do not repeat projects. Some examples of activities include clay and glazing, watercolor, prisma color marker art and multi-media. Friday's at Artworks is "Fun Day", we conclude the week with an art bounce house (Bethesda only), snow cones, face painting, balloon toss, as well as crafts and games.

The day consists of:

9am-9:15 Drop off
9:15-10:15am: Drawing/Pastels
10:15-10:45am: Break/Snack
10:45-12pm: Project#1

Teen Camp (ages 13-17)

The Teen program will begin each Monday with sculpture, introducing students to hand-building with clay. Tuesday's will consist of students go to a museum downtown, each camper will be given a smart trip card from Artworks staff to use the Metro. An Artworks Teacher will lead tours to different museums including, but not limited to, The Hirschhorn, Smithsonian Institution Freer Gallery, The Renwick Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, The Phillips Collection, The National Gallery, and The National Museum of Women in the Arts. Some of these museums we visit more than once in order to see different collections. On Wednesday's, Thursday's, and Fridays, students will be introduced to oil painting, we cover all techniques needed to paint with confidence. All levels are welcome, campers typically finish two paintings during the week.

Multiple weeks give a student the experience of what it is like to be a working artist, having an awareness of current and past artwork, building a body of work, and finally documenting it within a portfolio.
